Persistence of Vision – Defining the Future
When the Society of Motion Picture Engineers was constituted in Washington, DC on 10 August 1916, it set down the following as its objects:
Advancement in the theory and practice of motion picture engineering and the allied arts and sciences, the standardization of the mechanisms and practices employed therein, and the maintenance of a high professional standing among its members.
Over the ten decades that followed, the Society has embraced the relentless march of technology while maintaining this original vision of its founders. As we enter the centenary year of SMPTE, it is appropriate to honour that Persistence of Vision (pun intended) while gathering to celebrate how we are Defining the Future of the industry through standards development, encouraging membership and providing education resources for the global industry.

SMPTE15 in Sydney, Australia is projected to attract several hundred delegates alongside the exhibition that offers exhibit space for over 100 technology vendors drawing thousands of visitors. The 3-day immersive conference is scheduled to kick off with a keynote address by Chris Fetner, director of global content partners operations at Netflix.

Chris Fetner is Director of Global Content Partners Operations at Netflix. Fetner, a SMPTE member, began his career as an operations manager at a local PBS affiliate in Washington, D.C., and went on to serve as a producer for television programs including the award-winning show “Frontiers of Medicine.” He later served as a post-production and operations executive at Discovery Communications, guiding the company’s migration to an all-digital workflow, and as VP of Post-Production and technical services at the BBC Worldwide in New York, where he oversaw all technical operations supporting both the cable network BBC America and its distribution to EST, VOD, and SVOD customers. At Netflix, he and his team deploy tools, processes, and knowledge that allow content owners and service vendors to deliver high-quality content to Netflix simply and with efficiency.
