Persistence of Vision – Defining the Future

When the Society of Motion Picture Engineers was constituted in Washington, DC on 10 August 1916, it set down the following as its objects:

Advancement in the theory and practice of motion picture engineering and the allied arts and sciences, the standardization of the mechanisms and practices employed therein, and the maintenance of a high professional standing among its members.

Over the ten decades that followed, the Society has embraced the relentless march of technology while maintaining this original vision of its founders. As we enter the centenary year of SMPTE, it is appropriate to honour that Persistence of Vision (pun intended) while gathering to celebrate how we are Defining the Future of the industry through standards development, encouraging membership and providing education resources for the global industry.
